Gatlinburg, Tennessee may not be as much of a household name as some of the state’s other cities, but it has its own vibrant culture and some truly gorgeous scenery. As part of the United States’ south eastern region, there’s also plenty of rich history in the area. There’s no shortage of great restaurants, hotels, and other tourist attractions to enjoy there. Whether you’re on your own or traveling with a significant other or extended family, here are some of the best places to check out in Gatlinburg:

1 – The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is easily among the United State’s most visited national parks. It has truly ancient mountains, a wide array of plant and animal life, and it has remnants of the mountain culture of Southern Appalachia. While you’re there, you should check out the various hiking opportunities, the beautiful wildflower growth, and Cades Cove.

The latter is a valley that’s completed surrounded by mountains. There’s a one way road through the cove that goes on for 11 miles. This is perfect for anyone that loves to be close to nature. Just be warned, the summer time is hot in Tennessee, so you may be most comfortable in the spring or fall!

2 – The Gatlinburg Skylift

Famous for hauling innumerable tourists along Crockett Mountain, Gatlinburg Skylift has been going since the 1950s. As long as you aren’t afraid of heights, there may be no better way to enjoy the natural Tennessee scenery. The view is truly beautiful as you climb along the 1,800 ft height of the mountain. You can even take your time here, as it includes a rest area, gift shop, and several refreshments to enjoy.

3 – The Gatlinburg Space Needle

Located along the Historic Nature Trail, the Gatlinburg Space Needle overlooks the nearby Great Smoky Mountains. This is a great way for the more modern sort that enjoys air conditioning to still enjoy the view! You’ll be taken up to the top of the observatory by glass elevators, giving you a true appreciation for the amazing escalation of the mountainous region. You can use viewfinders once up top to check out the scenery below. Best of all, they don’t even charge you anything extra! It may not be as swanky as certain other Space Needles, but this is a must-visit destination all the same.
